The lab is composed of professors, graduate students, and visiting scholars who conduct research in various aspects of medical imaging.
   
Research profile
  There is a close co-operation with the departments of the Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital, such as Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiology, Neurophysiology, Neurosurgery, Neurology, Human Genetics, Periodontology, Stomatology and Maxillofacial Surgery, Forensic Dentistry, Gynecology, Gastroenterology, Pneumology, Molecular Imaging Center and Information Systems.

The research can be subdivided into three equally important areas:
  • Image acquisition and reconstruction
    Existing and new medical image acquisition methods (MR, CT, PET, ultrasound) are studied and simulated to estimate their accuracy and improve their performance. Also the reconstruction from projections is studied.
  • Image processing and image analysis
    This research includes image enhancement (e.g. contrast enhancement, noise removal in MR images), segmentation (e.g. tissue classification in MR images of the brain, detection of active brain areas in fMRI), and rigid & non-rigid registration (e.g. registration of 3D CT with 2D portal images for radiotherapy of the prostate, automatic construction of statistical brain atlas for image segmentation).
  • Visualization for Surgery Simulation and Navigation
    This area focuses on 3D surgery planning with soft tissue deformation, augmented reality and immersive visualisation, e.g. for oral implant surgery, maxillo-facial osteogenesis, distraction surgery, maxillo-facial soft tissue modelling, intra-operative and interventional visualization, virtual endoscopy and CT/MR colonography, realistic image-based facial modeling for forensic reconstruction and surgery simulation.
   
Spin-off
  Medicim
Medicim is a spin-off company of the Catholic University of Leuven, established in November 2002. Medicim is a software company developing Medical Image Computing applications that support the medical doctor to diagnose, and to plan surgical procedures.

Since Medicim is active in a multi-disciplinary field, strong collaboration with clinicians is important. Therefore, clinical partners are strongly involved in the development of new applications.

Medicim aims to present medical image information to the clinician in an optimal way to support diagnosis, therapy and surgery. Currently, our focus in on medical image computing applications of the head. However, further dedicated extensions towards different types of surgery are possible.

Maxilim is our 3D image-based software environment for orthodontists, maxillofacial surgeons and plastic surgeons. With Maxilim, the anatomy of the head is quantitatively inspected (3D cephalometry), surgery is planned and supported.

Oralim is Medicim's planning environment for oral implantology. It is part of Nobel Biocare's Teeth-in-an-Hour treatment concept that supports immediate loading of oral implants with a final bridge for edentulous and partial edentulous patients.
