EIBIR Winter School on Interdisciplinary Biomedical Imaging Which is the main objective of the Winter School and who sponsors it? The main objective of this biannual EIBIR Winter School is to support the interdisciplinary training of technical and clinical PhD students working in the broad area of biomedical imaging. This Winter School is organized and supported by the European Institute for Biomedical Imaging Research (EIBIR, www.eibir.org) in close cooperation with the European Society of Radiology (ESR). It will be open to both clinical and technical researchers, with the possibility to earn CME credits. In 2010, the Winter School is jointly organized by Mads Nielsen (DK), Dave Hawkes (UK), Wiro Niessen (NL) and Alejandro Frangi (ES). The Winter School is also endorsed by the Virtual Physiological Human Network of Excellence (www.vph-noe.eu). Who can take part in the Winter School? The School is mainly addressed to second- and third-year students pursuing their graduate studies in this field within PhD programs of biomedical engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, physics, medical physics, and medicine. We therefore assume that participants have a basic understanding of biomedical imaging, both in terms of acquisition and image analysis and interpretation. What is the rationale behind the EIBIR Winter School? Every year the Winter School will have two specific topics that will be covered from the perspective of novel methods for biomedical image acquisition, analysis and interpretation as well as from the perspective of computational modeling and interventional planning, where appropriate. Each topic will be covered based on the key driving clinical questions as well as from an understanding of the underlying disease mechanisms or pathophysiology. The faculty will include lecturers with a clinical, biomedical and technical background, from both academia and industry. What will be covered in this first edition? In this first EIBIR Winter School on Interdisciplinary Biomedical Imaging, two key clinical disease areas will be addressed which altogether represent the two leading causes of death worldwide: cardiovascular disease and oncology. A world-class faculty will cover during five days the most important topics and advances in this arena. The course will be hosted in Viladrau, located within the Montseny Natural Park (www.turisme-montseny.com/natural-park) about 70km from Barcelona, Spain. A total of 45 PhD students will be selected to take part in this event based on their curriculum and a letter of intention submitted to the Winter School organizers. The School will also feature reading groups extending the topics of the faculty lectures, a poster session where students will be able to receive feedback on their current research, a visit to Montseny Natural Park and other additional social activities.
